It’s a Start…

April 9, 2007 at 4:27 pm (Progress (with pics), Thigh high version)

I have officially cast on.  I have done the first five repeats on the foot and am now waiting for my sis-in-law to hand off her measurements so I know how far to go from here.  Yep, I started without the end-users stats.  I’m that kind of wildcat knitter.

Anyway, this is what it looks like so far (this isn’t quite five repeats, but I got excited).

Can’t figure this out…

April 8, 2007 at 7:52 pm (General comments)

Hiya, me again, the confused blog administrator… I can’t figure out how to see who posted which post, or even how to make the blog put the name in automatically

So, could I please ask of you that you sign your posts, either with your name or with your online handle? I wanted to e-mail the poster of that post (duh this sounds sooo lame… I keep repeating myself hehehe) to make sure that she saw my answer to her post.

Duh… just when I finished writing this post I noticed that on the right of the screen at the bottom of the list of things there’s a drop down list with the ‘authors’ listed. Could I please ask of you to either sign your post, or click your name in the drop down menu? It will make things easier for all of us :)

Off to mind my own business again…

Cheers Eva

Border

April 8, 2007 at 5:29 pm (Questions)

Anyone else start the border yet? I am thoroughly confused as to what I am doing. I thought I had a clue… but I must not have since it seems that I was off by a few stitches when trying to work the pattern. I emailed Marnie, so when I hear something out, I will share (unless someone else has any ideas first).

Grrrrr. I was so excited at my progress, and after trying this about 3 times, I could just cry.

Progress Update

April 5, 2007 at 4:11 pm (Progress (with pics), Thigh high version)

I tried on my Bellocq last night when I finished the second repeat of the calf shaping – even unfinished, this is now officially the tallest sock I’ve ever knit!  My goal is to finish one stocking every three weeks, so I won’t be working on these right down to the wire.  Tomorrow is two weeks – hopefully I’ll be doing a LOT of work on these this weekend.

Okay, here we are:

Bellocq progress 4/4
It’s about three inches to my knee, I think, and I’m still very pleased with it.

Bellocq progress 4/4

I wanted you to see the calf shaping, and this is about the best I could do with getting a photo of the back of my own leg.  I changed needles shortly into the calf shaping – while the socks aren’t completely uncomfortable, I don’t think I should have trusted my gauge swatch, and I’m going to knit the second sock on the size 2 the pattern calls for rather than the size 1 needles I (thought I) got gauge with. But the good news is that you can barely tell where I changed needles. (Snort.)

Bellocq progress 4/4
As if I needed to point it out.  Hear that deep sigh of relief my calf is taking?  I could pretend that it occurred to me to start them over – but no way.  Not even if I had all the time in the world.  I’m not enough of a perfectionist to really care – they fit well enough and are only just a tiny bit snug, and I’ll give a prize to anyone at the wedding who peers at them and declares, “Say, looks like you changed needles right there.”  :-)

And the winner is…

April 5, 2007 at 1:00 am (General comments, Thigh high version)

Not me, really.  But I can post now, so that’s a plus.

Anyways, I just began attempt two of the socks.  I’m planning on doing the thigh high version, but that may get rethought depending on how far my supplies will go.  The yarn store was exceedingly unhelpful when I was getting my stuffs.  I went in and asked for what I wanted, which was grey or slate sock yarn.  They said, “We don’t carry those colors.”  Period, end of story.  So I walked over and found their sock yarn.  They had a nice burgundy I’d have been happy with, but only one skein of it.  Anyways, to make a long story short, after a small quantity of arguing, some questions that either never got answered or were incorrectly answered, and general frustration, I ended up with 1000 yards of yarn that looked light grey.  It’s self-striping yellow and peach too.  Everyone else really likes the yarn and I’m still annoyed that it’s not neutral or blue.  One would think that after I said I was looking for slate or grey someone would have warned me that I was buying peach.  But maybe they don’t know their yarns.  At least the yarn is easy to work with.  I might just knit two pair in medium and give them to my sister.

The second oops was my fault.  By the time I decided on the yarn, I was ready to be done with the store, so I grabbed 16″ circs but not dpns.  If anyone hasn’t tried magic circle knitting on 16″, it’s possible, but really not fun.  I drove all over town the next day to find dpns in the right gauge.

That really covers the oops factors.  I’ve already frogged my first attempt because my guage was changing as I adjusted to the dpns and there were more mistakes that I liked in the lacing to that point, the point being the beginning of the heel rows.

I’m honestly more in love with the pattern now that I’ve worked with it than I was before.  It’s great fun and lace is very forgiving, if you don’t drop stitches.  I’ll prove that too.

Round One

Anyways, other details, I knit a tight gauge, so I’m on US3 needles, rather than 2.  Oh, and I’m a super new knitter…  Started in January.  So far, it’s all been very intuitive, though.  And easy patterns aren’t any fun to work with.

That’s about all I can think of.  I do apologise for the longish rant.

 Cheers.

Newbie!

April 3, 2007 at 5:16 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m new here and I thought I’d pop in and say ‘hi’ and show you a button that I whipped up this morning.  I know it’s not very fancy or anything, but I’m still realtively new at making these things – lol.

I can’t wait to get started on my socks, I’m going to make the crew length as I don’t really wear ‘high’ socks and even a crew is high for me – lol.  I’m going thru my massive stash to pick out the ‘perfect’ yarn … hopefully that wont take to long!

Looky There!

April 2, 2007 at 7:18 pm (Uncategorized)

Eva, you’re a genius!  And I’m so delighted, I’m not even going to make the stupid “Eva Genius” joke I want to make.

I have nothing to post in the way of pictures or progress.  You see, my yarn (Knit Picks Gloss in Cocoa) is still at the post office.  Two blocks from my house.  Where I can almost taste it.

Someday, my Gloss will come… and when it does, I’ll have something good to say, I’m sure.

Meanwhile, just happy to be here with the Bellocq people.

Question from the administrators :)

April 2, 2007 at 6:38 pm (Uncategorized)

Okay, this is the first time that I’m using a multiple author blog with wordpress, so it is learn-and-go (or rather learn-and-don’t-go).

Marin, I think you should be able to post now. Is there anyone else who can only leave comments, but not post?

Please let me, or Alyson know (if you leave a comment on this post, we’ll get it by mail and will be able to get in touch with ya).

Cheers Eva – who still has not finished her sockret pal sock, so is not allowed to start the Bellocqs.

Just Starting…

April 2, 2007 at 6:20 pm (Crew version, Progress (with pics))

I had to copy Alyson… since we always seem to knit the same socks! I loved how hers were coming out, so I decided to start a pair myself.

Bellocq Sock

I am working on these in Koigu with size 2 needles (if you ask me the Koigu color, I won’t be able to remember). This has to be my favorite color of yarn I have ever bought, and I have been looking for a special pattern to put with it. So yay!

I am going to make the crew version due to the amount of yarn I have (and since I cannot remember what color it is, it would be kind of hard to buy more…) I am half of the way through the cuban heel… and am just loving these!

YoYo’s Stockings (In Progress)

March 29, 2007 at 7:07 pm (Progress (with pics), Thigh high version)

I’ve cast on for the thigh-high (gasp!) stockings and have worked one sock already up past the cuban heel.  I’ll be starting on the calf shaping soon, and I’m still loving the pattern!  Here’s my progress so far:

Progress, 3/28

I’m using Socks that Rock in Rose Quartz – I ordered four skeins to complete the thigh-highs, so I should have plenty.  I’m knitting them in the Tall/Medium size, with the cuban heel.  I got gauge with a size 1 needle (although I’m thinking I may go with a 1.5 for the second sock, depending on how things go.)

Thoughts on the pattern so far – Marnie is NOT KIDDING about making sure you try them on as frequently as you can.  These fit like a glove everywhere but around the ankle – snug, snug snugsky!  I should have given some more thought to the stretch and give of the lace versus the less-stretch-and-give of stockinette – these are awfully snug at the ankle.  I could frog them back and adjust, but I’m on such a time crunch – I will probably go up to at least a size 2 needle for the ankle on the second sock, though.

They’re for a very special occasion – I’ll be wearing these at my wedding!  And lest you should worry that no one will see them because they’ll be hidden by the dress – trust me, I’m sure I’ll be flashing them all over the place – they’re so beautiful!
